City Builds New Green Building

Mayor Rick Baker joined city officials and guests to break ground on a new building for the Water Resources Department at 1635 Third Avenue North. The new building has been designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards and includes many sustainable design features. The new facility will also be storm hardened to withstand 163 mph hour wind loads and provide for continuous operations during storm events.

NFL Helps "Jr. Scrubbin 'Da Burg" Go Green

On Friday, Mayor Baker joined more than 120 children from the local community for the first annual "Jr. Scrubbin 'Da Burg" to plant more than 40 trees at Lake Vista Park, "Jr. Scrubbin 'Da Burg" is an annual community service project where all the city's youth councils unite in an effort to beautify the city. The planting was done by the NFL in partnership with the Tampa Bay Super Bowl Host Committee and the Florida Division of Forestry.

Governor Crist Announces Florida's Green Product List

Governor Charlie Crist today announced that Florida state and local governmental purchasers now have access to the Florida Climate Friendly Products List, which includes over 6,680 environmentally preferable products available for purchase under Florida state term contracts. As part of Governor Crist’s Executive Order 07-126, the Department of Management Services partnered with the Department of Environmental Protection to develop this list and encourage state agencies to purchase products that have a reduced environmental impact.

St. Petersburg Customers -- Tighter Watering Restrictions in Effect

ST. PETERSBURG (Nov. 3, 2008) -- The Southwest Florida Water Management District's Governing Board voted October 28 to tighten water restrictions for all of Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Pasco counties since regional water supplies have not returned to pre-drought conditions.

The tighter restrictions continue to limit watering using potable, private well, and surface water sources to one day per week. In addition, hand watering is now prohibited between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Automatic shut-off devices...

According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Florida ranks among the top producers of greenhouse gases, having generated nearly 300 million metric tons of greenhouse gases just last year. That’s why Gov. Crist proposes new rules to cut 50 million metric tons by 2025, and even more in the distant future.
